CB: Who are you in quarantine with? CG: My husband and two children, ages 6 and 7.
CB: What is your quarantine story? CG: We started a family newspaper called The Corona Chronicles to journal our quarantine experience. Each day my kids take turns being the “journalist” of the day. They write down what we did each day, the meals we ate, who we prayed for, the best moment of the day and anything new each person in the family learned. We also include any pictures taken each day.
It will be fun for us to look back years from now and remember how we bonded during a time when our usual activities were put on hold. Plus, activity helps to improve my children’s writing, communication and typing skills.
CB: What are 3 tips you would give to other Moms to help them during this time?
CG: 1. Establish and maintain a predictable, yet flexible routine. Most kids thrive on having predictable schedules they can rely on. If possible, try to structure a week for your children that replicates a typical school or daycare week. Map out what they will be learning or doing each day being sure to factor in movement and snack breaks when needed.
2. Set clear expectations and boundaries
Set the ground rules with your children, partner or others in your support system with regards to expectations around schoolwork and playtime. Also, set clear boundaries between work and home life, mealtimes and relaxation, or when you take charge of certain
tasks and when others do.
3. Be honest with your children about the pandemic
Remember that during this time your kids may be stressed out too. That’s why it’s important to keep them updated on the COVID-19 outbreak. Talk to them in an age-appropriate and
reassuring way, but don’t overwhelm them with too much information.
